Who We Are

The Little Bulgaria Initiative is a cultural organization based in Cambridge, dedicated to preserving and promoting Bulgarian traditions, culture, and heritage within the UK. Our mission is to create a strong sense of community among Bulgarians living abroad while fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the Bulgarian diaspora and local communities.

Our Objectives

At The Little Bulgaria, our core objective is to ensure that the rich Bulgarian culture and traditions are passed down to future generations and shared with the broader public. Through organizing events such as festivals, folklore performances, and workshops, we aim to celebrate Bulgarian music, dance, customs, and folklore. These events provide a platform for the Bulgarian community to connect with its roots and for others to learn about and appreciate Bulgaria's cultural contributions.

We also strive to act as a bridge between the Bulgarian community and other local and international groups, encouraging cultural exchange and fostering an appreciation for diversity. By showcasing Bulgarian culture, we contribute to the multicultural fabric of Cambridge and surrounding areas.

What We Do

  • Cultural Festivals: We organize events like the annual "Cambridge Sings and Dances" festival, which brings together Bulgarian folklore dance and singing groups from the UK. These festivals are a vibrant celebration of Bulgarian traditions, attracting hundreds of attendees from both the Bulgarian and local communities.

  • Workshops & Performances: We host workshops and performances that teach traditional Bulgarian dances, songs, and customs. These activities are designed for both Bulgarians and non-Bulgarians to foster a deeper understanding of Bulgarian culture.

  • Educational Activities: Through partnerships with Bulgarian Sunday schools like "Vasil Levski" and "St. Ivan Rilski" in Cambridge, we help ensure that children learn about the Bulgarian language, literature, history, and geography, preserving their cultural heritage while living abroad.

  • Community Engagement: We create opportunities for Bulgarians living in the UK to come together, strengthen their sense of belonging, and celebrate their shared cultural identity. By organizing inclusive events, we promote social cohesion and cultural diversity.

Our Impact

Since our inception, The Little Bulgaria has successfully organized numerous events, attracting hundreds of participants from across the UK. Our recent summer festival, covered by the Cambridge Independent, brought together over 2000 attendees and featured performances from 20 folklore dance groups, showcasing over 40 traditional dances. Special guests such as the Mayorс of Cambridge, the Bulgarian Ambassador, and local leaders attended, highlighting the growing recognition of our cultural efforts within the wider community.
